Home was a solo exhibition at the Latcham Gallery, Stouffville, ON (Maura Broadhurst, curator) in 2004. The two series exhibited were Home and Emotional Floorplans. In both cases, the personal or subjective aspects of dwelling were my subject.
The Home series consisted of approximately 50 works of acrylic on canvas. Each was a meditation on the familiar, peaked-roof iconic house form, as well as an exploration of a limited colour palette. Each little house was animated in some way, and anthropomorphic.
In the parallel series, Emotional Floorplans, I worked with different individuals to develop “emotional floorplans” of participants’ dream houses – sometimes homes of desire, sometimes of memory, sometimes houses from actual dreams.
In both series, I was compelled by the emotional dimensions of space, and finding affective means of accessing the powerful feelings people invest in the spaces that house them, which of course are not always the spaces they consider to be their true “home.”
